Achieve anti-ageing results with the help of your diet
The beauty industry is constantly bombarding us with adverts for products that claim to beat wrinkles and tone up skin.
However, it seems as though each time a 'miracle' cream or potion comes out, it is dismissed by scientists who insist its effects are all in the mind.
What may be better than an eternal quest to find the elixir of youth is to keep your body looking young from the inside out.
Ageing is inevitable, but skin and hair can start looking sallow and lank even in young people if they do not provide the right nutrients for their bodies - to replace old cells with better ones, you have to put the right building blocks in.
WomenFitness.net, an online health and fitness guide, reports that to stay looking youthful, it is important to keep calorie consumption and saturated fat intake down, as well as eating lots of oily fish, vegetables and wholegrains.
However, there are specific foods you can eat that are particularly anti-ageing, starting with avocado. This is a good source of vitamin E and also has a high folate content, which could give you a more youthful complexion, women’s magazine Marie Claire states.
Dark-coloured berries such as blueberries and blackcurrants are also excellent, as they defend the body against free radicals that can lead to skin damage.
Perhaps surprisingly, dark chocolate in moderation is anti-ageing, as long as it is made of 70 per cent cocoa solids or more, which will improve skin and hair.
To further help in the fight against toxins, it's important to eat plenty of vegetables, particularly cruciferous ones such as cabbage, broccoli and kale, while ginger and garlic will also help the circulatory system.
Marie Claire suggests getting hold of some hemp oil for salad dressings, mayonnaise and dips due to its high levels of vitamin E, essential amino and fatty acids and great antioxidant properties.
"High in vitamin E, a great antioxidant, products that contain this miracle oil can help slow down the effects of skin ageing"
Meanwhile, you could try swapping your mid-afternoon snack for a handful of nuts such as walnuts, almonds or brazil nuts, as they are very high in good fats and minerals and may boost your immune system, making you look much better.
Finally, don't forget that eating anti-ageing foods might not help much if you don't also drink plenty of water. The body is nearly three-quarters H2O, so needs topping up with around eight glasses a day to keep the lymphatic system and other processes going.
Follow these tips and you should have plenty of people fooled about how old you really are!
