A change - as good as a rest?
Everyone feels a little fed up once in a while and daydreams about escaping to a desert island for some peace and quiet.
What with the recent recession and the pressures of everyday life it's safe to say you're not likely to feel like jumping for joy all of the time - but what about when you begin to feel really dissatisfied with one aspect of your life?
Is it best to grin and bear it fearing you may be overreacting, or to take the plunge and make a change?
A new survey has discovered that only 12 per cent of Brits would describe themselves as 'perfectly happy',whilst 56 per cent say they would really like to overhaul their life.
One-quarter highlighted a new job as their dream in the Home Learning College research, another 19 per cent reported longing for a new home and 16 per cent said they would ideally abandon the UK altogether in search of the perfect life abroad.
However, sometimes you may find that changing small things at a time helps you to feel more satisfied with the bigger picture.
MaryBeth Smith, a performance improvement specialist in Texas says on her advisory website Embracing Change that this is something she always advocates for her clients.
"Just take a moment to voluntarily choose to do something - anything at all - in a different way than you normally do," she advised, suggesting even trivial things like parking in a different spot at work or choosing a different dish off the menu at your favourite restaurant.
The expert said she finds that when she does this she feels more invigorated and less stuck in a rut than before.
"I feel more courageous, more self-determining and more creative," she enthused.
Once you're in a happier mindset, you can then re-evaluate and see if you do need that overhaul.
If you're still feeling like a change of job then why not try a course at night school to give you a taste of a different career?
Or if your home is making you feel frustrated you could redecorate your living room completely.
This may save you the hassle of moving if you discover you don't really need to, as well as allowing you to look upon familiar surroundings in a whole new light.
Give it a try and perhaps you won't need that desert island daydream quite so often!
