Improve your wellbeing through sleep

Improve your wellbeing through sleep Most of us underestimate the importance of sleep. We pay a great deal of attention to our diets and fitness regimes, but for some reason getting quality rest at night doesn't seem to be a priority. However, failing to sleep enough can have a major impact on your wellbeing. Feeling tired and grouchy can affect the decisions you make throughout the day, as well as your mood and stress levels.

It's difficult to get a good night's sleep if you've got something on your mind, so it's important to relax your mind before turning in. If you're feeling tense, then unwind by having a lavender bath or reading a book or magazine. Don't make the mistake of trying to sleep when you aren't tired. Lying in bed and watching the minutes pass by on your clock is not a good idea. If you're awake and your mind is racing, then get up and do something. Make a list of jobs to do the following day or do a crossword.

Remember, your bedroom is for sleeping in. Having a television, games console, CD player and laptop hooked up beside your bed will only distract you. Your room should be a relaxing place where you can unwind and leave the stresses and strains of the day behind.

Try to rise and sleep at the same time every day - even at the weekend. This will help to set your body clock and after a few weeks you'll be waking up naturally, without the aid of your alarm. Having a short afternoon nap can be an effective way of boosting your energy levels, but make sure you don't drift into a deep sleep or you'll feel groggy and disorientated when you wake. Keep your power naps under 20 minutes.

Avoiding caffeine and alcohol is also advisable, as these act as a stimulant and stay in your system for several hours. Be careful what you eat too – consuming a fatty meal shortly before bed could lead to heartburn and indigestion.

If you have problems sleeping on a long-term basis, then make sure you see your doctor.
