Switch off at the end of the day

Switch off at the end of the day People are working longer hours than ever and, with the introduction of new technology, many are also taking their jobs home with them. You may feel as though dealing with emails and reports after hours is productive, but sacrificing your personal time can eventually take its toll on your mental wellbeing.

It's important to have clear boundaries separating your work and home life, and to realise that mixing the two can leave you feeling drained and rundown. There are a number of steps you can take at the end of the day to relax and leave your work troubles at the door. You should aim to take at least half an hour out for yourself each evening to clear your mind and reflect on the day. This can be done by enjoying a warm bath with scented candles, taking your dog out for a stroll or trying some basic yoga.

Another great way to switch off is by learning how to meditate. There is plenty of research to suggest that this can help to strengthen the mind and enhance wellbeing. Choose a quiet place where you are unlikely to be interrupted and relax each part of your body – starting with your toes and working upwards. You should focus on your breathing and the feel of your limbs, pushing any other thoughts to the back of your mind. Imagine that you are somewhere peaceful - lying on a beach or sitting in a meadow - and stay like this for at least 20 minutes. If you're interested in exploring other meditation techniques, you will find plenty of information available online and at local libraries and health centres.

Another way to switch off from work and the stresses and strains of everyday life is to take up a new hobby. Starting dancing or painting one evening each week will give you something to look forward to, enhance your skills and give you the opportunity to meet new people outside of your usual circle of friends and colleagues. Enrolling in a class on a Wednesday or Thursday evening will also help to break up the working week.ADNFCR-2418-ID-19818528-ADNFCR
